When Joann Fabrics officially shuttered all their stores earlier this year, many cosplayers were worried about the future Yaya Han’s Cosplay Fabrics collection. Since its debut in 2016, the line has been a staple in the community. Cosplay Fabrics made a splash by offering specialty fabrics made with cosplay needs in mind. The collaboration between Cosplay Fabrics and Joann Fabrics brought materials such as ornate brocades, 3D printed spandex, and novelty trims, once reserved for professional costumers, into the hands of everyday makers. With Joann’s closure, the future of the line was uncertain.
Yaya Han has confirmed that her signature fabrics have found a new home at Michaels Craft Stores, the largest arts and crafts retailer in North America. On August 6th, 2025, Yaya Han shared in an Instagram reel, “It’s happening! My CosplayFabrics.com collection is coming to Michaels Stores!!” The news was met with excitement from cosplayers around the world who relied on her fabrics and trims for their cosplays.
Cosplay Fabrics are anticipated to arrive in Micheals stores beginning in Fall 2025 in over 400 stores across the US and Canada. This announcement is especially exciting for Canadian cosplayers as this will be the first time that Cosplay Fabrics will be available in stores in Canada. About a dozen Michaels locations across Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia that will carry the Cosplay Fabrics line. Cosplay Fabrics will be available online as well. Until the official release of Cosplay Fabrics in Michaels stores, cosplayers can still purchase a limited selection of fabrics and trims from Mood Fabric’s online store and Linda’s Fabrics, two retailers that partnered with Yaya Han after the Joann closure.
The move comes at a pivotal time for Michaels, which recently acquired Joann’s intellectual property and private-label brands following its bankruptcy. As part of their strategy, Michaels will be absorbing hundreds of former Joann products and stocking them in over 600 Michaels stores. This signals a significant expansion into the fabric and sewing categories, areas where demand has grown sharply over the past few years. In a recent press release, Michaels announced that searches for “fabric” on its website are up 77 percent, while searches for “sewing” have increased by nearly 40 percent.
Bringing Yaya Han’s fabrics into the Michaels stores allows them to fill a gap left by Joann’s closure and helps the retailer tap into the ever-growing cosplay market. With fan conventions drawing thousands of attendees each year and cosplay crafting flourishing on social media, the demand for unique and durable fabrics has never been higher. Yaya Han’s Cosplay Fabrics line, designed by a cosplayer for cosplayers, meets this need with materials that balance creativity and functionality.
For Yaya Han, the move is another milestone in a career defined by building bridges between cosplay and mainstream culture. By placing her fabrics in Michaels Craft Stores, she ensures that cosplayers and makers can continue to find the resources they need to bring their cosplays.
As Michaels embraces the legacy of Joann while carving out a new future in fabric retail, Yaya Han’s Cosplay Fabrics collection stands as both a creative lifeline and a symbol of resilience. For the cosplay community, it’s proof that even when one door closes, another one opens. This time, that door opens at Michaels Craft Stores.
